Overview of mediation services

Mediation is used as a way to resolve difficult or broken workplace relationships. Facilitated by an impartial mediator, mediation assists individuals or teams in conflict to resolve their disputes by moving toward practical solutions and agreements created and owned by the disputing parties.

Confidential to the disputants, mediation empowers individuals in dispute to create their own solutions to resolve their conflict. Successful outcomes are commitments going forward, written in the form of Agreements or Team Pledges, made voluntarily and signed by all parties.

Weighed against the ongoing costs of difficult and unproductive relationships at work, the possibility of formal procedures or worse still employment tribunals, workplace mediation is efficient and cost effective.

Robert is an Accredited Workplace Mediator and member of the CMC (Civil Mediation Council).

Individuals and teams

Mediation resolves conflict between individuals and within teams.

Whether mediating between individuals or within a team, a non-judgemental, safe and constructive environment is created for everyone. Within this environment each disputant can communicate and negotiate in an honest and open way with each other. Mediation recognises emotional and personal needs and reaches a future-focused resolution acceptable to all parties.

Team mediation allows both collective and individual causes of conflict to be identified. The methods of finding resolution might include telephoning or meeting with individuals, or a confidential questionnaire; specific mediation between individuals and/or a whole team event. Outputs might include both Voluntary Agreements between individuals and/or an agreed Team Pledge.

All parties can be assured that voluntarily entering into mediation does not take away their choice to follow more formal procedures later should they wish to do so.

Practicalities

STILLHR provides organisations with relevant documentation to support them in discussing the option of mediation with individuals and/or teams in conflict.

Once the disputants have voluntarily agreed to proceed, STILLHR mediation services are commissioned by the organisation, and STILLHR provides all the documentation necessary to set the mediation scene for the disputants.

Individual workplace mediation requires the disputants to set aside a full day, within which Robert meets with each person individually in the morning before bringing both together for the afternoon.

The organisation arranges for a private, quiet and neutral space for the day.

Though based in central London, Robert works throughout the UK.

Investment required

A workplace mediation day with two individuals costs £725 plus VAT and £250 plus VAT for the follow-up meeting usually six to eight weeks later.

Once provided with an assessment of the team based conflicts causing concern, Robert will propose appropriate mediated solutions which might include telephoning or meeting with individuals, or a confidential questionnaire; specific mediation between individuals and/or a whole team event. The costs will thereby vary but the rates above can be used as a guide.
